ENSO - El Nino Southern Oscillation
The author of this site had the distinct pleasure of being introduced to the ENSO phenomenon, by one of the first practitioners that utilized ENSO data, in an operational weather forecasting mode, Edward (Ted) Edie, of the New Zealand Meteorogical Service. Ted Edie was regarded as a pioneering practical meteorologist by his peers.
Our knowledge of the implications of the ENSO together with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Madden-Jullian Oscillation (MJO) is far from complete. We have only recently started to understand the global implications on weather and climate that these atmospheric modulations induce. As stated in a recent paper:
"...the findings reported here indicate that atmospheric processes that are part of the ENSO cycle are collectively a major driver of temperature anomalies on a global scale."
